Diploma to Degree Engineering in Gujarat (D2D): Complete Guide

How diploma holders can join B.E./B.Tech directly in the second year through the D2D admission process in Gujarat — eligibility, seats, colleges and preparation strategy.

The Diploma-to-Degree (D2D) route lets diploma engineering students in Gujarat skip the first year of B.E./B.Tech and join directly in the second year (third semester) of a degree engineering program. It's a valuable path for students who preferred the applied, hands-on nature of diploma but now want a full engineering degree.

Who is eligible

  • You must hold a 3-year diploma in engineering from a Gujarat-recognised polytechnic (usually GTU-affiliated or Board of Technical Examinations).
  • Your final-year diploma must be complete and passed.
  • The branch you choose in the degree program must match your diploma branch (Mechanical diploma → Mechanical B.E., Civil → Civil, etc.). ACPC publishes the eligibility matrix every year.

How admission works

D2D admissions in Gujarat are handled by ACPC through a separate counselling round distinct from the regular 12th-based B.E. admissions.

  • Registration on the ACPC D2D portal opens shortly after diploma results.
  • Merit is based on your diploma aggregate percentage (usually the last two semesters or full three years, per that year's rules).
  • You fill a preference list of branch–college combinations, similar to regular ACPC counselling.
  • Seat allotment is done in 2–3 rounds, followed by a "mop-up" round for vacant seats.

Seats and colleges

Every degree engineering college in Gujarat reserves a fixed percentage of second-year seats (usually 20–25% of first-year intake, subject to AICTE norms) for D2D candidates. Government colleges like L.D. College of Engineering, Vishwakarma Government Engineering College and Government Engineering College Modasa are the most competitive. Reputed private options include Nirma University, PDEU, Charusat, Marwadi University and DDU Nadiad.

Bridging the gap

Because you skip the first year, you miss subjects like Engineering Mathematics-I, Engineering Physics, and basic Programming. Most Gujarat universities compensate by adding one or two bridge courses in your third and fourth semesters. You'll typically have to clear these separately.

Is D2D right for you?

D2D makes sense if:

  • Your diploma percentage is strong (65%+ opens up decent colleges; 80%+ opens up top ones).
  • You want an engineering degree without repeating first-year subjects you've already studied.
  • You have clarity on the branch — switching branches through D2D is generally not allowed.

D2D is not ideal if:

  • You want to change your engineering branch entirely.
  • You're targeting IIT / NIT / IIIT — those admit only through JEE and don't have D2D lateral entry.

Preparation strategy

Focus on your diploma-final-year subjects rather than external test preparation. Your D2D rank is decided by diploma marks — one strong semester can lift you into a much better college. In parallel, brush up your Class 12 mathematics and programming basics; you'll need them from day one of your third semester.
