Higher Education in Gujarat: Universities, Affiliations and Admissions Explained
Understand how Gujarat's higher education works — public and private universities, affiliation system, common entrance tests and how students get admitted.
Gujarat's higher education has grown rapidly in the last two decades. The state now hosts more than 90 universities and 2,400+ affiliated colleges, with a clear split between traditional state universities, technical universities and a fast-growing private sector.
Public state universities
These multi-faculty universities affiliate hundreds of colleges and run major undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The largest are Gujarat University (Ahmedabad), Saurashtra University (Rajkot), MS University (Vadodara), Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (Surat) and Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University (Patan). GTU is the dedicated technical university for engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA.
Private and deemed universities
Nirma, PDEU, Ahmedabad University, Karnavati, Marwadi, GLS, Parul, RK and Charotar are among the well-known private universities. They offer flexible curriculums, industry partnerships and modern infrastructure, often at higher fees than public colleges.
National institutes in the state
IIM Ahmedabad, IIT Gandhinagar, NID, NIFT Gandhinagar, PDEU, DA-IICT, IIPH and SVNIT Surat are nationally ranked and pull students from across India.
How admissions work
- Engineering and pharmacy — JEE Main / GUJCET via ACPC counselling.
- MBA — CAT, CMAT, GCET via institute-level or state counselling.
- Medical, dental, AYUSH — NEET via state counselling.
- Architecture — NATA / JEE Paper 2.
- Arts, commerce, science UG — university-level merit lists based on Class 12 marks.
Affiliation, autonomy and accreditation
Most colleges are "affiliated" — they teach a syllabus set by the university and write its exams. Some have earned autonomy, which lets them design their own curriculum. NAAC grade, NBA accreditation for engineering programmes and NIRF ranking are useful quality signals when comparing colleges.
Picking the right path
Match the university type to your goal — public state universities for affordability and reach, GTU for technical careers, private universities for specialised programmes, and national institutes if you are competitive enough to crack their entrance tests. GUJCOM's filters let you compare colleges across all of these in one place.
